What Everyone Should Know About Cryptanalysis

By Steven Morris

Generally speaking, this is a study and practice of looking at a system of information in order to find secret codes, messages, or other information hidden within the system. There are a number of reasons why an individual or organization would have a good reason to do such a thing, both nefarious and for a greater good. It might be surprising to learn the many different uses of cryptanalysis.

When most people think of encrypted data, they think about times when they have typed in their password onto a website, and the site assures the user that their data is safe because the page has been encrypted. While this is a very powerful method of security nowadays, it should be known that there are still ways in which breaching this security system is possible. However, it would take a very good hacker to do so, and they would have to have a good reason to target your information specifically.

In many cases, cryptanalysts will look to take advantage of any weak points in an encryption, so it is important to look out for those ahead of time. What this means is having a professional take a look at a security system just to make sure it is up to par. A good rule of thumb is that if the professional sees a weakness, the hackers will see it too, and exploit it right away.

There have been many things that have developed in this field as time has gone by. The one thing that hasn't changed, though, is the overall goal of breaking a code. As cryptography itself has become more and more complicated, the practice of breaking these codes has had to advance along with it.

The first cryptanalysts were working with a pen and paper, something that seems unthinkable given how complex and difficult codes are nowadays. Things were much simpler then, but they probably took even longer given the manual nature of the work involving writing and solving equations. Large computers were used in the World War II era, and then we arrive at the advanced technological setup of today.

This type of specialist will start out by being given some data that has been encrypted. His or her goal is to figure out as much as they can from what they're given. Since the information they are given is coded and incomplete, this can be a very challenging task.

When breaking a code, cryptanalysts make use a number of different mathematical techniques. This heavy focus on mathematics makes a deep understanding and high skill at it very important in this field. Using math is the only possible way to solve encrypted messages so complex, and even though calculating devices are commonly used, having a good mental calculator is essential in this job.

Once a cryptanalyst has figured out how a code works, he or she must decode the message. This involves looking at all of the encrypted messages. The individual must use deductive reasoning and eliminate the wrong answers, and see the original message that they have been provided with in its entirety to make sure their solution actually works and makes sense.
